Bryn Mawr Holds Off Basketball, 38-35

(Nov. 22, 2008) - Led by senior center Jessica Allen, the Bryn Mawr College women's basketball team held on to defeat Mount Holyoke College 38-35 today at the Vassar College Athletics and Fitness Center. It was the first of two games for both teams at the 27th Seven Sisters Classic.
In earlier action today, Wellesley College edged Vassar 65-61 in overtime, and Smith College downed Agnes Scott College 64-51. The event will conclude with three more contests tomorrow. Wellesley and Agnes Scott will kick things off at 10:00 a.m. They will be followed by Smith and Bryn Mawr at noon. Mount Holyoke (0-3, 0-0 NEWMAC) and Vassar will cap things off at 2:00 p.m.
Bryn Mawr shot 28.6% (14-49) from the field and 62.5% (10-16) from the free throw line in its first outing of the 2008-09 campaign. The Owls found the win column despite turning the ball over 27 times. Allen posted a double-double on 20 points and 11 rebounds, both game highs. The center converted 6-of-19 shots from the field and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe. Junior forward Shanika Bridges-King grabbed 11 boards, while classmate Caroline Heffernan tallied three blocked shots.
Mount Holyoke was limited to just 21.4% (12-56) shooting from the floor and committed 25 turnovers. The Lyons outrebounded Bryn Mawr 46-39. They were paced by junior guard Erin Cain, who collected 15 points and seven boards. First year forward Tricia Chase added five points and a team best nine rebounds.
In a nip and tuck first half, neither team led by more than four points. Mount Holyoke scored the first four points of the game, but Bryn Mawr grabbed a 6-4 edge on a jumper by Allen at the 13:57 mark. The Owls took a 20-18 advantage into the locker room. Allen recorded 16 of her 20 points before the break.
Bryn Mawr scored the first four points of the second stanza to extend its cushion to 24-18. The Lyons responded with an 8-2 run to knot things up at 26-26 with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation. Cain made a three pointer and a layup during the spurt.
From there, the Owls took control. They scored the next four points and led 36-31 at the 1:27 mark. A jumper by Cain and layup by Chase sliced the deficit to 36-35 with 23 seconds to go. First year guard Lindsey Darvin knocked down a pair of free throws to push the lead to 38-35 with 14 seconds remaining. On the Lyons ensuing possession, junior center Kate Shafir had a chance to send the contest to overtime, but her three point attempt went just wide.
