South Hadley, Mass. - April 2, 2022 - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday as the Lyons hosted Wheaton and prevailed, 6-3, in the MHC Field House.
The victory marks the first conference and overall win of the year for Mount Holyoke College, while Wheaton falls to 3-8 overall with an 0-1 mark in league play.
Mount Holyoke took two of the three doubles matches to start the contest with a 2-1 advantage, before the Lyons' top four players all produced wins in single play to seal the 6-3 win.
At No. 1 doubles, the tandem of Annika Chai (London, England) and Annissa Aamoum (Dulles, Va.) defeated Miriam Galindo Cerrada and Mareike Mueller 8-4 before Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) and Hannah Middleton (Pawcatuck, Conn.) knocked off Katie Steinberg and Alexis Acosta 8-4 at the No. 2 spot. At No. 3 doubles, Nikki Cheng (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Claudia Gonzalez-Vazquez (Cancun, Mexico) fell to Izzy Kruse and Zoe West, 8-3.
Chai delivered a big 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles while Kiran Cavale cruised past Alexis Acosta at No. 2 singles by a score of 6-2, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, Aamoum grinded out a win over Steinberg 7-6, 6-1, while at No. 4, Middleton posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mueller. Wrapping up the match, Cheng dropped a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 decision to Izzy Kruse, while West defeated Gonzalez-Vazquez 6-0, 6-1.
Mount Holyoke returns to the court on Wednesday, April 6 when the Lyons host Simmons at 4 p.m.
