Cross Country Competes at NEWMAC Championship

FRANKLIN PARK, Mass. - Led by a 30th-place finish from junior captain Dana Fry, the Mount Holyoke College cross country team placed eighth of 11 teams at the 2013 NEWMAC Championship, hosted by Babson at Franklin Park. Overall, the Lyons saw two runners finish in the top 50 in the 5k event, which was won by MIT.

Fry (Avon, Conn./Miss Porter's School) posted a time of 19:48.33 in the race, which featured 154 runners. Sophomore Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) ran to 48th overall, crossing the finish line in a time of 20:12.85, while classmate Hillary Detert (Brunswick, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) was 74th with a time of 21:11.15.

Junior Liz Baker (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic School) finished the race in 78th with a time of 21:16.64 and first year Brianna Weir (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) placed 83rd overall, crossing the line in a time of 21:26.06.

Additionally, junior Zoe Weizenbaum (Amherst, Mass./Pioneer Valley Performing Arts) came in 99th in the race with a mark of 21:53.90, while first year Becca Rogers (Tucson, Ariz./St. Gregory College Prepatory School) was a place behind in 100th with a time of 21:55.36.

Rounding out the effort for the Lyons was first year Emma Tolerton (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery), who was 122nd with a time of 23:15.70.

MIT won this year's championship title, while Engineers junior Elaine McVay was the individual champion, crossing the finish line with a time of 18:16.85.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on November 16 when it competes at the 2013 NCAA New England Regional Championship, hosted by the University of Southern Maine.
