Cross Country Competes at Open New England Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College cross country team took to the course on Saturday, competing at the 2013 Open New England Championships at Franklin Park. The event, which featured teams from all divisions, saw the Lyons compete in the sub varsity race with a team of five individuals. MHC was paced by sophomore Elizabeth DeLeon.

DeLeon (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) posted a time of 20:05 and finished 70th overall in the sub race, which had 299 total competitors alone. Junior Liz Baker (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic School) came across the finish line with a time of 21:13, which was good for 162nd overall, while senior captain Lucia Garcia (Bakersfield, Calif./East Bakersfield) was close behind in 173rd with a time of 21:22.

First year Brianna Weir (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) was 217th overall with a time of 22:09, while classmate Emma Tolerton (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) rounded out the solid efforts on the day in 264th with a time of 23:29.

Sarah Kiernan from New Hampshire won the race with a time of 18:24.

Mount Holyoke returns to action next Saturday when it competes at the 2013 Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Smith College at 10:30am.
