Under the direction of 29th-year head coach Tina Lee, the Mount Holyoke track & field team saw action in 16 different meets in 2015-16. Pacing the way was senior captain Camille Coklow, who repeated as a National All-American during the indoor campaign.
The Lyons had a solid opening to the indoor season at the Smith Invitational, highlighted by victories from Coklow in both the 60-meter dash and as a part of the Distance Medley Relay. Mother Nature forced the team to cancel its second meet of the year as snow and ice kept them away from Middlebury, but the squad returned to action the following weekend at Smith's Benyon Invite. Coklow once again shined with a victory in the 60-meters, while five others recorded finishes in the top-seven.
Mount Holyoke went on to compete at the Springfield Invite the next weekend as the 4x800 relay team of senior Elizabeth DeLeon, sophomore Mia Barnes, first year Corrin Moss and sophomore Sunny Shan claimed victory to lead the way.
Strong efforts continued to prevail as MHC opened February at the Wesleyan Invitational, where Coklow (60-meter dash), Moss (3,000-m run) and Barnes (5,000-m run) all claimed victory.
The squad continued the next weekend at the MIT Invitational, which saw a number of strong efforts, including fourth overall in the 1,000-meters by sophomore Caroline Black. MHC finally made it to Middlebury in late February as three competed at the Division III New England Championships, highlighted by Coklow's third-place finish.
In the final meet before the NCAA Championships, Coklow took center stage at the ECAC Indoor Championships. She opened defense of her 2015 ECAC title in the 60-meter dash with a season's best time of 7.66 seconds to finish second in the preliminaries. The next day, she sprinted her way to her second ECAC 60-meter dash title, posting a school record time of 7.63.
Coklow went on to appear at her third Indoor National Meet, heading to Iowa to vie for an NCAA title. With one of the top three times in the country, she put herself in great position during the preliminaries, placing third overall in her heat and fifth overall with a mark of 7.63 - which equaled her school record at ECAC's. The following day, she repeated as a National All-American, crossing the finish line in third overall with a school record time of 7.62.
As spring season approached, the Lyons felt the relief of a mild winter, opening the outdoor campaign in late March at the Wesleyan Invitational. DeLeon highlighted the efforts with a sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run. MHC followed that effort up the next weekend at Fitchburg State, which saw five top-10 efforts on the day.
At the Smith Invitational the next weekend, DeLeon paced the team once again with a victory in the 1,500-meter run. It was the 4x100 relay team that shined at the Springfield Invite on April 16 as the foursome of first years Destiny Williams and Zahkeyah Allen, along with sophomore Maria Lewis and Coklow, earned a runner-up finish behind the host Pride.
The Lyons continued to charge, heading into the Aloha Relays at Bowdoin with solid momentum. Barnes won the grueling 10,000-meter run, while DeLeon was the victor in the 5,000-meter run. The following weekend saw MHC head to Coast Guard for the 2016 NEWMAC Championships. DeLeon ran to fifth overall in the 5,000-meter event, while sophomore Shante Henderson was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. As a team, the Lyons were ninth overall.
The Lyons closed out the season at the New England Division III Championships as first year Donari Yahzid placed 18th overall in the long jump.
Mount Holyoke saw four student-athletes garner NEWMAC Academic All-Conference recognition.
