Track & Field Competes at Bowdoin's Aloha Relays

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Mount Holyoke College track & field team was in action on Saturday, competing at the 2016 Aloha Relays, hosted by Bowdoin College. The Lyons finished seventh overall on the day, highlighted by victories in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs.

Senior Elizabeth DeLeon claimed victory in the 5,000-meter event, crossing the line in a time of 18:44.04, while sophomore Mia Barnes was the winner in the gruelling 10,000-meters. She earned the victory with a time of 42:03.10.

The 1,500-meter race saw sophomore Sunny Shan place 10th overall with a time of 5:01.56, while first year Veneta Cholakova was 15th in the same event with a mark of 5:17.02. The pair also followed one another in the 800-meter run as Shan finished 13th (2:29.45), while Cholakova was 17th (2:35.74).

First year Mara White also had a solid day, finishing 14th in the 200-meter dash (28.15), 11th in the 400-meter (1:07.84) and 17th in the long jump (4.32m - 14-02.25). White also helped the Lyons 4x100 relay team to sixth overall in a time of 54.21. Other members of the relay included first years Zahkeyah Allen, Destiny Williams and Donari Yahzid.

Yahzid went on to place eighth in the javelin throw (25.53m - 89-03) and 13th in the long jump (4.50m - 14-09.25). Allen was 13th as well in the shot put event (8.70m - 28-06.50).

Rounding out Saturday's strong efforts was sophomore Shante Henderson, who was fifth overall in the 100-meter hurdle event. She posted a time of 16.48.

Mount Holyoke is back in action next Saturday when it travels to Coast Guard to compete in the 2016 NEWMAC Championships.
