Lacrosse Comes Up Just Short in Season Finale at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Apr. 21, 2012) – The Mount Holyoke College lacrosse closed out its 2012 campaign with a 14-8 loss to NEWMAC foe Springfield College this afternoon at Stagg Field. Midfielders Kirsten Kilburn and Naomi Miller scored two goals apiece for the Lyons, who wrapped up their season with an overall record of 6-8 and a league mark of 1-5.

Annabel Barrett Junior attacker Molly Macdonald collected a goal and two assists. Meanwhile, senior midfielder Hilary Bombard, junior attacker Christina Horimoto and sophomore attacker Liz Randolph chipped in with one strike apiece. On the defensive side, sophomore Annabel Barrett scooped up four ground balls.

Sophomore attacker Kelly Gallo piled up six points on four goals and two assists to set the tone for Springfield. The Pride also received a boost from senior midfielder Jackie Moscardelli who posted four goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Meghan Flanagan contributed a pair of goals, one assist and five draw controls. Meanwhile, junior midfielder Allie Davis added a pair of tallies.

Springfield jumped out to a 3-0 edge and led 9-3 in the early stages of the second half.

Refusing to go away, Mount Holyoke (6-8, 1-5 NEWMAC) reeled off four straight goals to slice the deficit to 9-7. The Lyons trailed 10-8 after a Kilburn strike with 7:40 remaining in regulation, but Springfield responded with a 4-0 run to close out the game. Gallo scored three of her four goals during the rally.

With the win, the Pride sealed the second seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament.

Springfield (9-7, 5-1 NEWMAC) finished with advantages in shots (31-21), draw controls (15-9) and ground balls (22-13).

Sophomore goalkeeper Anne Versprille made nine saves for the hosts.

At the other end, juniors Jamie Theophilos and Liz Malenfant combined for 11 stops for Mount Holyoke.
