Babson Tops Lacrosse to Remain Unbeaten in League Play

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Apr. 14, 2012) – The Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team suffered a 21-7 setback to NEWMAC foe Babson College this afternoon despite three goals from junior attacker Molly Macdonald. It was her seventh hat trick of the season.

Jacinta Edebeli Macdonald was aided up front by sophomore attacker Liz Randolph, who finished with two goals and five draw controls. Senior midfielder Hilary Bombard scored once and collected four draw controls. Meanwhile, classmate Alex Crean chipped in with a goal and two ground balls.

Prior to the contest, Bombard, Crean, Jacinta Edebeli, Elizabeth Holsing and Jeanmarie Petersen were honored for their contributions to the Mount Holyoke program over the past four seasons.

Eight players scored goals for Babson, which ran its win streak to eight and improved to 4-0 in league play. The Beavers were paced by sophomore midfielder Misha Beatty, who exploded for nine points on five goals and four assists. Junior attacker Jameson Spang found the back of the net six times. Meanwhile, classmate Taylor Kralovenec scored five times and added a pair of assists. Senior midfielder Trisha Babson came up with a goal and five assists to round things out for the guests.

Babson jumped out to a 6-3 edge and led 12-6 at the intermission. Spang scored five of her six goals before the break, while Kralovenec had three. The Beavers then outscored Mount Holyoke 9-1 in the second half to put things out of reach. They finished with advantages in shots (37-19), ground balls (21-11) and draw controls (16-14).

Sophomore goalkeeper Julie Baharestani made seven saves for the guests. At the other end, junior Liz Malenfant got the start between the pipes for the Lyons. She made four saves in the first half before giving way to classmate Jamie Theophilos, who turned away 10 shots down the stretch.

Mount Holyoke (5-7, 1-4 NEWMAC) will return to action on Thursday, when it visits Bridgewater State University for a non-conference game beginning at 6:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Babson (9-2, 4-0 NEWMAC) will continue its NEWMAC schedule at MIT on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
