Bombard’s Heroics Boost Lacrosse Past Bridgewater State in Overtime

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (Apr. 19, 2012) – Senior midfielder Hilary Bombard found the back of the net 2:51 into overtime to lift the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team to a dramatic 12-11 triumph over Bridgewater State University this evening at Swenson Field. With the win, the Lyons snapped a four-game slide and improved to 6-7 on the year.

Alex Crean Bombard matched her career-high with four goals while also collecting four ground balls and three draw controls. Mount Holyoke also received a boost from sophomore attacker Molly Macdonald, who recorded her eighth hat trick of the season. Senior attacker Alex Crean scored twice and added an assist. Meanwhile, first year midfielder Kirsten Kilburn chipped in with two goals and five draw controls.

Sophomore midfielder Taylor Clancy piled up three goals, two assists and eight draw controls to set the tone for Bridgewater State. The Bears also received solid production from junior attacker Sammi Salverio, who finished with a hat trick. First year defender Michelle Navoni added a pair of strikes for the Bears.

The game was nip-and-tuck throughout, with neither side leading by more than two goals. Mount Holyoke jumped out to a 2-0 advantage and led 6-5 at the break. After Clancy put Bridgewater State in front 11-10 at the 7:06 mark of the second half, Macdonald sent the contest to overtime with her third tally of the day just over a minute later. Bombard then scored what proved to be the winner 3:09 into the extra session. It was the lone shot for either side in overtime.

Mount Holyoke finished with a 20-16 edge in the shot column.

Junior Jamie Theophilos got the start between the pipes for the Lyons. She made one save in the first half before giving way to classmate Liz Malenfant, who closed out the game and was credited with the win.

At the other end, sophomore Victoria Moore made three stops for Bridgewater State (7-7, 5-0 NEWLA).

Mount Holyoke (6-7, 1-5 NEWMAC) will put the finishing touches on its 2012 campaign at Springfield College on Saturday at noon.
