COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 21, 2011) - Junior attacker Molly Macdonald poured in a career-high five goals to lead the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team to a 15-13 triumph over Carthage College this afternoon at Stewart Field. With the win, the Lyons improved to 4-1 on the year and concluded their spring break trip with a 1-1 mark.
Mount Holyoke also received a boost from first year midfielder Kirsten Kilburn, who piled up three goals, one assist and four draw controls. The rookie has recorded hat tricks in each of her first five collegiate outings and will enter conference play with a team-best 17 goals.
Senior midfielder Hilary Bombard scored twice and assisted on another. Meanwhile, junior midfielder Katya Planson chipped in with a pair of tallies.
Carthage was paced by junior midfielder Lauren Chatham, who exploded for six goals and one assist. Sophomore attacker Sydney Whitaker recorded two goals and an assist, while junior midfielder Olivia Nino scored two and hauled in three draw controls.
Mount Holyoke jumped out to a 3-0 advantage and led 8-2 after a Bombard tally 9:30 into the contest. Macdonald's fourth goal of the day put the Lyons in front 10-6 with just over four minutes remaining in the opening period, but Carthage closed out the half with two straight goals to slice the deficit to 10-8.
The Lady Reds continued to roll in the opening minutes of the second stanza, scoring three straight goals to grab an 11-10 edge.
After falling behind for the first time, Mount Holyoke regained control with five unanswered goals over a span of 10 minutes. Macdonald's fifth tally of the day capped off the rally and gave the Lyons a 15-11 cushion with 10:21 remaining in regulation.
Carthage made things interesting with two late goals, but the margin was too much to overcome.
Junior Jamie Theophilos got the start between the pipes for the Lyons. She played the first 17:20 before giving way to classmate Liz Malenfant, who turned away 10 shots over the final 42:40.
At the other end, sophomore Ali Gorman came up with 10 saves for Carthage (3-3).
Mount Holyoke (4-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) will kick off its NEWMAC slate at home versus Wellesley College on Saturday at noon.
