BRISTOL, R.I. (March 10, 2012) – First year midfielder Kirsten Kilburn found the back of the net with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team to a dramatic 15-14 triumph over Roger Williams University this afternoon at Bayside Field. Kilburn finished the day with four goals and eight draw controls for the Lyons, who improved to 2-0 on the year.
After falling behind 9-7 in the early stages of the second half, Mount Holyoke exploded for six straight goals over a span of 5:45 to grab a 13-9 advantage. Kilburn and sophomore midfielder Brianne Phelan scored two times apiece to spark the run.
Refusing to go away, Roger Williams responded with five unanswered goals to regain the lead. First year attacker Deven Machette poured in three goals during the rally. Her third put the Hawks in front 14-13 at the 1:08 mark.
From there, it was all Mount Holyoke. Junior attacker Molly Macdonald knotted things up with a free position goal with 32 seconds to go. Kilburn then secured the ensuing draw control and drew a yellow card deep in the Roger Williams zone. She was awarded a free position attempt and scored what proved to be the winner with 17 seconds remaining in regulation.
Macdonald enjoyed a career day for the Lyons, scoring four times. The guests also received solid production from Phelan, sophomore Liz Randolph and senior Hilary Bombard, who chipped in with two goals apiece. Meanwhile, sophomore Annabel Barrett recorded four ground balls and two caused turnovers to set the tone on the defensive end.
Roger Williams (0-4, 0-0 CCC) was paced by Machette, who collected five points on three goals and a pair of assists. First year midfielder Kristen Pingree found the back of the net four times, while senior attacker Danica Delia dished out three assists.
Junior Jamie Theophilos got the start between the pipes for the Lyons. She made three saves in the first half before giving way to classmate Liz Malenfant, who stopped three shots after the break. Malenfant was credited with the win in her collegiate debut.
Sophomore Meagan Connelly and junior Justine Sullivan combined for eight saves at the other end.
