It was a season of excitement and bittersweet moments for the Mount Holyoke rowing team in 2013-14. From a runner-up showing at Seven Sisters, back-to-back wins by the varsity eight, medalist honors for the novice eight and the final race of 22-year head coach Jeanne Friedman's career.
The season kicked off at the Snake Regatta as the varsity eight battled to a seventh-place finish. The novice eight also had a solid outing, powering their way to fourth.
Mount Holyoke quickly turned its sights on the 2013 Seven Sisters Championships at Bryn Mawr. The varsity eight race saw the Lyons finish fourth. Combined with victories by the novice eight and the second varsity eight, MHC finished runner-up.
For their efforts, junior captain Hannah Arbach and classmate Sarah Fleming were named to the Seven Sisters All-Championship Varsity Team. Additionally, first year Briana Chace was tabbed to the All-Championship Novice Team.
The spring season brought a number of outstanding results as the heart of the season got underway in the opener at Tufts in early April. The varsity eight shined in their race, finishing second in the opening race before claiming victory in the Petite Final. Also performing strong was the novice eight, which won its first race before being edged in the final.
Wins were the name of the game the following weekend as the varsity eight recorded back-to-back victories on Lake Quinsigamond. Day one saw the V8, novice eight and novice four post wins over Clark and the University of Vermont.
MHC concluded the weekend with victories from the varsity and novice eight boats, to go along with runner-up placing by the second and third varsity eight crews. In the varsity eight win, MHC eclipsed Simmons, Union, Franklin & Marshall, Clark and UMass-Lowell.
With the momentum of victory in their favor, the Lyons returned to Worcester the next weekend to compete in the NEWMAC Championships. The novice eight continued to dazzle, winning its race and the Gold Medal honors, over Wellesley, Smith and Clark. The varsity eight posted a fifth-place finish as two members of the boat – Arbach and first year Meghan Ryan – were tabbed to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team.
Heading into the home stretch of the season, the Lyons novice eight boat rode the wave of success straight into the New England Championships. The boat finished third in the Grand Finals to garner Bronze Medal honors. MHC's varsity eight was also strong, placing third in the Third Final.
The final race of the season proved to be just as dramatic as the earlier ones. Fresh off their bronze finish the weekend before, the novice eight powered its way to a runner-up finish in the Grand Final at the ECAC National Invitational Collegiate Regatta. The crew earned Silver Medal for their efforts. The varsity eight boat was also spectacular, battling past Smith, Simmons and Clark for third overall in the Third Final.
Also impressive was the crew of the novice eight, which powered its way to top finishes with the same line-up over the final four races of the season. Those included were coxswain Leela Woody, Briana Chace, Moira Brown, Alexa Sullivan, Rosalind Waltz-Peters, Molly Lapointe, Azulina Green, Regan Adair and Chenyue Lu.
The Lyons were equally impressive in the classroom as six student-athletes were named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Team. Also, nine were named to the ECAC/NIRC Stewards' All-Academic squad. Rounding out the honors was Arbach, who was named to the ECAC/NIRC All-Conference Team for the second straight season. She was one of just 42 individuals selected for the honor.
