Nine from Crew Earn Top Academic Honors

CENTERVILLE, Mass. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference National Invitational Rowing Championship Board of Stewards has released its selections for the 2013 Stewards' All-Academic Team and nine Mount Holyoke College student-athletes have been named. A total of 355 student-athletes from 27 institutions earned the distinction for the 2013-14 academic year.

Representing the Lyons on this year's team were junior captain Hannah Arbach (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock), sophomore Gabriel Chevalier (Ashfield, Mass.), junior Sarah Fleming (Elk Grove, Calif./Sacramento Country Day School), junior Katelyn Joyal (Belmont, Mass./Belmont), junior Emily Loughlin (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining), senior Casey McClellan (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle), senior captain Cara Murphy (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights), sophomore Lauren Sohn (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) and junior Helena Walker (Boulder, Colo./Idyllwild Arts Academy).

During the 2013-14 campaign, the Lyons crew team, under the direction of 22-year head coach Jeanne Friedman, had a number of solid outings. The varsity eight finished fifth at the NEWMAC Championships, while placing 15th at both the New England Rowing Championships and the ECAC Championships.

Also seeing success was the novice eight, which won their race at the NEWMAC Championship, finished third overall to earn a Bronze Medal at New England's and placed second to grab Silver at the ECAC/NIRC Regatta.

Individually, a number of student-athletes were recognized during the season, including Arbach and first year Meghan Ryan (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neill), who were All-NEWMAC Varsity Second Team selections. Arbach and Fleming were also named to the All-Seven Sisters Varsity Team, while first year Briana Chace (Richmond, R.I./The Greene School) was an All-Seven Sisters Novice Team selection.

Academically, Arbach, Chevalier, Fleming, McClellan, Murphy and Sohn were named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Team, while McClellan and Murphy were Seven Sisters Scholar Athlete selections.

To receive All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35. A transfer student must have completed one year of study at the institution.
