Coast Guard Takes Down Volleyball, 3-0

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 20, 2009) – The Coast Guard Academy women’s volleyball team raced to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-23) victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium this evening. It was the Bears tenth straight win over the Lyons and their 20th of the 2009 campaign.

Leading the way for Coast Guard was first year right side hitter Lauren Bloch, who amassed seven kills and three service aces. Classmate Karen Matic dished out 23 assists from the setter position, while junior libero Jessica Anderson and sophomore defensive specialist Kiley Johnson contributed ten digs apiece.

First year outside hitter Kathryn Brummer collected nine kills to pace the Lyons. Junior outside hitter Rosa Marruffo recorded ten digs, while classmate Kateryna Kuc totaled 14 assists from the setter slot.

Mount Holyoke (4-17, 0-7 NEWMAC) is slated to host the annual Volleyball Hall of Fame Women’s Invitational this weekend. The 16 team event will take place at Smith College in addition to Mount Holyoke. After playing one match against Middlebury College on Friday at 5:00 p.m., the Lyons will wrap things up with two more contests on Saturday. Coast Guard (20-3, 5-2 NEWMAC) is scheduled to visit Endicott College for a pair of contests on Saturday. The Bears will tangle with the host Gulls at 11:00 a.m. before facing off against Connecticut College at 1:00 p.m.
