2009 Seven Sisters Volleyball Championship

???NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (Oct. 11, 2009) – In its final match of the 2009 Seven Sisters Championship, the Mount Holyoke College women’s volleyball team downed Elms College 3-0 (25-23, 25-7, 26-24). With the victory, the Lyons secured fifth place at the tournament. In other action, Bryn Mawr College defeated host Smith College 3-1 in the third place match, and Vassar College downed Wellesley College 3-0 in the Championship tilt.

The Lyons were paced by juniors Kateryna Kuc and Rosa Marruffo, who were each named to the All-Tournament Team. They were joined on the squad by Katie Solook and Katie Merrill of Bryn Mawr, Sarah Potts and Hilary Koenigs of Vassar, Victoria Peng and Isabel Custodio of Wellesley, and Lauren Martinez and Mikal Minarich of Smith.

In addition to avenging an early season loss to the Blazers, Mount Holyoke put the brakes on a seven match slide. Kuc guided the Lyons from the setter position, dishing out 24 assists. Meanwhile, Marruffo delivered 12 kills from the outside hitter spot and first year outside hitter Morgan Cooley registered 12 digs.

Mount Holyoke (4-13, 0-5 NEWMAC) will return to action on Tuesday, when it visits Wheaton College for a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) clash beginning at 7:00 p.m.
