Volleyball Earns Tri-Match Split

HARTFORD, Conn. (Sept. 26, 2009) – The Mount Holyoke College women’s volleyball team split a pair of matches at St. Joseph College of Connecticut today. After suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 setback to the host Blue Jays, the Lyons rebounded with a 3-0 triumph over Becker College. It was their second win in as many tries against the Hawks this season. Both contests took place at the O’Connell Center.

In its first outing of day, Mount Holyoke was edged 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 10-25, 15-11) by St. Joseph (4-7, 0-3 GNAC). Junior outside hitter Rosa Marruffo recorded her third career double-double on 11 kills and 11 digs to lead the way for the guests. She also racked up eight service aces in the contest. The Lyons received solid production from first years Morgan Cooley and Kathryn Brummer. Cooley registered nine kills and six digs, while Brummer tallied eight kills and 12 digs. Junior setter Kateryna Kuc accumulated 28 assists, nine digs and eight service aces to round things out.

Marruffo was at it against in Mount Holyoke’s 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-7) rout of Becker (2-7, 0-0 NECC). This time, she delivered nine kills and a team best 14 digs. Cooley posted ten kills, while Kuc added 24 assists. The Lyons also received a boost from first year defensive specialist Sorcha Grogan, who erupted for nine service aces.

Mount Holyoke (3-6, 0-3 NEWMAC) will resume its New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate on Tuesday, when they host Babson College at 7:00 p.m.
