Clark Sweeps Volleyball, 3-0

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 19, 2009) – The Clark University women’s volleyball team swept New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-22) this afternoon at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. It was the Cougars sixth straight win over the Lyons and their first in league play this season.

Leading the way for Clark was sophomore outside hitter Amira Tranchell, who tallied a team best 13 kills. Senior defensive specialist Emily Visone collected a squad high 16 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Kristin McGinty added ten kills and a pair of blocks. Sophomore setter Nichole Lopez directed the Cougars offensive attack with 23 assists, and first year defensive specialist Amanda Harris helped the defensive effort with ten digs.

Mount Holyoke was paced by junior outside hitter Rosa Marruffo, who amassed team highs of seven kills and two service aces to go with 13 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Tyler Protano-Goodwin recorded six kills and a block, while first year outside hitter Morgan Cooley registered three kills and a squad best 19 digs. Rounding things out for the Lyons was junior setter Kateryna Kuc, who finished with 19 assists.

Both squads are slated to resume their league schedules on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (2-3, 0-2 NEWMAC) will wrap up a three match homestand versus WPI, while Clark (2-4, 1-1 NEWMAC) will play its fourth of five straight road contests at Smith College.
