Tennis Downs Smith, 7-2 in NEWMAC Play

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team took five of six singles matches and bested Smith College in two of three singles to capture a 7-2 victory in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday. With the win, the Lyons improve to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while the Pioneers slip to 0-4 both overall and in the NEWMAC.

Junior captain Margaux Holloschutz and first year Ishita Tibrewal kicked off doubles action with an 8-3 win against Smith's Jordan Dubin and Ruth Yi. Senior captain Sarah Anischik and sophomore Amy Chen then posted MHC's second point with an 8-1 victory over Kelli Cheung and Alexandra Steck.

In singles action, Holloschutz was victorious over Dubin by a 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 margin in the first flight, which Anischik defeated Cheung in seconds with a 6-3, 6-2 score. Sophomore Mira Murali then bested Yi in third singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Tibrewal improved to 5-1 on the season with a fourth flight win against Samantha Peikes, 6-2, 6-2.

Sophomore Alexa Colas rounded out the Lyons points with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Seema Samawi in the fifth flight.

Mount Holyoke will be back on the court this weekend as several players will travel to Williams College to compete in the 2014 ITA New England Tournament.
