Mount Holyoke Golf Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 27, 2009) Led by Aimee Caligore and Ktistin Berretta, the St. Lawrence University women's golf team grabbed the team title at the 34th annual Mount Holyoke College Invitational this weekend. A total of 15 teams and 81 individuals participated in the tournament, which was hosted by The Orchards Golf Club (par 725,880 yards).

The Saints recorded a team score of 643 (322, 321) en route to the championship. Amherst College (655,324, 331) and Williams College (667,332, 335) rounded out the top three. Fairfield University (670) and the State University of New York at Cortland (697) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

For the second time in three years, Amherst's Hayley Milbourn took home top individual honors after posting a two day total of 154 (78, 76). She entered the second round trailing Berretta by a pair of strokes but overcame the deficit by carding a tournament low score of 76 today.

Caligore and Anne OLeary of Williams finished in a deadlock for second place after posting matching scores of 158 (80, 78). They ended the weekend one stroke in front of Berretta, who collected fourth place with a total of 159 (76, 83).

Mount Holyoke was paced by junior Aliza Hanif, who amassed a two day total of 161 (80, 81) to secure fifth place overall. First years Kate Merrill and Felicitas Gerlach chipped in with 40th (181) and 48th (184) place results, respectively. The hosts did not figure into the team scoring, as a pair of their players withdrew from the tournament after the first round.

Mount Holyoke will return to action next weekend, when it participates in the Middlebury College Invitational. The event is slated to begin on Saturday and conclude on Sunday.

The Saints recorded a team score of 322 to gain the early advantage. They will enter the second round with a two stroke lead over Amherst College. Fairfield University (328), Williams College (332), Mount Holyoke (339) and New York University (339) also fared well in round one.

Kristen Berretta of St. Lawrence turned in a score of 76 (+4) to gain the individual lead. She sits one stroke in front of Fairfield's Kristen MacDonald and two shots ahead of Amherst's Hayley Milbourn.

Mount Holyoke has been paced by junior Aliza Hanif and sophomore Alexandra Irish, who each finished the day in a tie for fifth place (80).

The second and final round of the Mount Holyoke Invitational will take place tomorrow at The Orchards.
