Field Hockey Falls To MIT in NEWMAC Semifinals, 2-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. (Nov. 7, 2009) – The clock has struck midnight for the sixth seeded Mount Holyoke College field hockey team, which suffered a 2-0 setback to second seeded MIT in the Semifinal Round of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament this afternoon.

With the win, the Engineers punched their ticket to the NEWMAC Championship. They will face off against fourth seeded Springfield College, which advanced by way of a thrilling 3-2 overtime triumph over top seeded Wellesley College. The Pride will be looking for their sixth straight league title and eighth overall when the squads tangle at Wellesley tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Both of today’s Semifinal matches also took place at Wellesley.

Mount Holyoke saw its Cinderella run through the tournament come to a crashing halt. The Lyons concluded their season with an overall record of 10-8 and went 4-4 in league play. They earned the right to play in the Semifinals by upsetting third seeded Clark University 2-0 in the Quarterfinal Round last Saturday.

Both teams went scoreless until the 58:02 mark, when sophomore defender Anna Teruya scored what proved to be the winner off an assist from first year midfielder Molly McShane.

The Engineers then put things out of reach in the 68th minute, when first year forward Kimberly Barker broke in all alone and found the back of the cage for her 18th goal of the season. Sophomore forward Kameron Klauber was credited with the assist on the play.

MIT (16-4, 5-3 NEWMAC) finished with edges in both shots (11-6) and corner chances (10-9). Junior goalkeeper Keri Dixon turned in her fifth shutout of the fall with a pair of saves. Meanwhile, sophomore Katie Gibson made five stops for the Lyons.
