Field Hockey Has Win Streak Snapped at Wesleyan, 3-0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (Oct. 22, 2009) – Using a balanced scoring attack, the Wesleyan University field hockey team blanked Mount Holyoke College 3-0 this evening in non-conference action at Smith Field. With the win, the Cardinals put an end to the Lyons four match winning streak.

Following a scoreless first half, Wesleyan found the cage two times in a span of 2:54 early in the second stanza to pull away. Both goals came as a result of penalty corner opportunities.

First year midfielder Ashley McLaren scored the first at the 40:48 mark off assists from sophomore forward Morgan McCauley and junior midfielder Allie Lynch. First year forward Taryn Murray then redirected a Lynch shot into the cage to put the Cardinals in front 2-0.

The hosts tacked on an insurance goal in the 61st minute, when McCauley scored off a feed from McLaren.

Wesleyan (7-5, 2-5 NESCAC) finished with advantages in both shots (14-5) and penalty corner chances (11-5). First year goalkeeper Tori Redding went the distance between the pipes for the Cardinals, making two saves en route to the shutout. At the other end, sophomore Katie Gibson made seven stops for the Lyons.
