Field Hockey Soars Past WNEC, 4-0

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 22, 2009) - Powered by sophomore forward Shara Robertson, the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team cruised to a 4-0 triumph over Western New England College this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. Robertson recorded her second career hat trick to help the Lyons to their third win in as many tries.

Mount Holyoke jumped out to 1-0 edge just 12:24 into the contest, when Robertson fired a shot past Western New England sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Orszulak from the middle of the circle.

The Lyons extended their cushion to 2-0 in the 37th minute on senior forward Katelyn Frick’s team leading fourth tally of the year. After receiving a short crossing pass from sophomore forward Jess Fajardo on the doorstep, Frick trickled a shot past Orszulak.

Robertson then added two more goals down the stretch to ice things for the hosts. Her second tally of the day came in the 56th minute, when she collected a loose ball off a scramble in front and slipped a shot over the goal line. Sophomore forward Kirsti Wiemokly was credited with the assist on the play. Robertson one-timed a crossing feed from senior midfielder Peggy Wefald to complete her hat trick in the 65th minute.

Mount Holyoke outshot the Golden Bears 26-6 and finished with a 9-6 edge in penalty corner chances. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Gibson made three saves en to her fourth career shutout. At the other end, Orszulak registered 13 stops.

The Lyons (4-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) are slated to kick off their New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schedule at Wheaton College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Western New England (1-7, 1-1 TCCC) will return to action on Thursday, when it hosts Smith College at 7:00 p.m.
