Larson-Koester Wins Discus at NEWMAC Championships

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (Apr. 28, 2012) – Senior Miriam Larson-Koester continued her outstanding spring with a dominant performance at the NEWMAC Track and Field Championships today. The veteran was at her best in the discus, where she took home top honors with a toss of 40.38 meters. In the process, she established a new meet record and earned First Team All-Conference honors. The previous record was set by the Coast Guard Academy's Carrie Kilroy in 1999.

Larson-Koester also secured third place in the shot put (11.16 meters) and seventh place in the hammer (38.62) to run her point total to 18. As a team, Mount Holyoke College finished in ninth place with 22 points.

The Lyons also received a boost from senior Felicia Cordeiro, who broke her own record in the steeplechase with a seventh place time of 12:35.58.

Sophomore Kathleen O'Connor, first year Hannah Sawyer, sophomore Kate Brackett and junior Maddie Ballon collected seventh place in the 4x100-meter relay (54.28).

Meanwhile, O'Connor and Ballon teamed up with senior Holly Valenzuela and first year Anna Rapperport to post eighth place in the 4x400-meter relay (4:32.37).
 
MIT piled up 208 points en route to its fourth straight NEWMAC title. The Engineers were followed by Wheaton College (144), Springfield College (107), WPI (91.5), Smith College (82.5), Wellesley College (56), Coast Guard (42), Babson College (27) and Mount Holyoke (22). This year's championship took place at Smith.

Larson-Koester will represent the Lyons at next weekend's New England Division III Championships in the discus and shot put. The meet is slated to take place on Friday and Saturday at MIT.
