Indoor Track and Field Opens 2011-12 Slate at Smith Winter Classic

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (Dec. 3, 2011) – Led by senior Jacinta Edebeli, the Mount Holyoke College indoor track and field team kicked off its 2011-12 slate at the non-scoring Smith College Winter Classic today.

Edebeli was at her best in the 200-meter dash, where she grabbed third place with a time of 27.93. She also qualified for New England Division III Championships with her fourth place toss of 11.08 meters in the shot put and her time of 8.22 in the 60-meter dash.

Senior Miriam Larson-Koester returned from a one-year hiatus to claim sixth place in both the weight throw (11.01 meters) and the shot put (10.26 meters).

Meanwhile, junior Jenna Slipke collected second place in the 800-meter run with her time of 2:31.64. She was closely followed by sophomore Naomi Miller, whose time of 2:36.02 was good for third place.

Mount Holyoke also received a boost from senior Holly Valenzuela, who completed the one mile run in 5:40.21 to secure second place overall. Sophomore Lucia Garcia took second (5:43.58), and first year Emily Baker finished third (5:44.09).

The Lyons are scheduled to take part in the Springfield College Invitational on Saturday, January 21 at noon.
