MAYAGUEZ, P.R. -- The Mount Holyoke College tennis team won five out of six singles matches to claim a 6-3 victory at the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez on Tuesday, in the first of two spring break matches the Lyons are playing on the island this week.

Mayaguez, an NCAA Division II team, won two out of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. Mount Holyoke sophomore Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) and first-year Rachel Allen (Mary Esther, Fla.) opened the match with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles over Miah Catalano and Alanis Rivera, but the host Tarzans took both first and third doubles in tiebreakers: Yadalis Rodriguez and Dana Gomez won 8-7(3) over junior Annika Chai (London, England) and sophomore Kirat Kaur (Chandigarh, India), while Sofia Pagan and Jessica Latorre edged sophomores Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) and Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) 8-7(7) at third doubles.

Chai tied the match up for the Lyons as she clinched a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles over Rodriguez. Smith's 6-0, 6-2 victory over Catalano at fourth singles gave the Lyons a 3-2 lead. Kaur defeated Gomez 6-1, 6-1 at second singles, and Allen's 6-3, 6-3 wn over Rivera clinched the team win for Mount Holyoke. Vavra scored the Lyons' sixth point with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-1 win over Pagan at fifth singles.

Mount Holyoke (5-2) will play at the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras on Thursday at 10am.
