SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College tennis team had no trouble posting a 9-0 victory over Western New England University on Saturday at the MHC Indoor Tennis Courts, in the Lyons' last match before they travel to Puerto Rico.

Mount Holyoke (4-2) took a 3-0 lead through doubles play, allowing the Golden Bears (3-8) only three games. Junior Annika Chai (London, England) and sophomore Kirat Kaur (Chandigarh, India) teamed up to defeat Jess Cofrancesco and Emma Miller 8-0 at first doubles; sophomore Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) and first-year Rachel Allen (Mary Esther, Fla.) downed Catie Seklecki and Sydney Shepard 8-1; and sophomores Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) and Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) finished off Gabby Tirkot and Dani Martinez 8-2.

Smith defeated Shepard 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles to give the Lyons a 4-0 lead. Chai and Kaur won at first and second singles, respectively, by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores, with Kaur's victory clinching the team win for Mount Holyoke at 5-0. Allen posted a 6-2, 6-0 win at third singles, Vavra won 6-0, 6-3 at fifth singles, and Bagley-Fortner moved to 4-2 at sixth singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Martinez.

The Lyons will travel to Puerto Rico for their spring break trip and play their next two matches there: at the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez on March 19 at 10am, and at the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras on March 21 at 10am.
