Chai, Kaur combine for three wins at ITA Regionals

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Representing the Mount Holyoke tennis team at the ITA Regional Championships on Friday, Lyons junior Annika Chai and sophomore Kirat Kaur both went 1-1 with a win in the A Singles Draw Round of 64. The two Lyons also paired up to go 1-1 in the doubles draw at the tournament, being held at Wesleyan University.

Chai (London, England) defeated Courtney Banks of Connecticut College 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the Round of 32, where the Lyons' No. 1 player was matched up against fourth-seeded Erica Ekstrand of Williams College. Chai pushed Ekstrand to an extra game in the first set before bowing out by a score of 7-5, 6-0.

Kaur (Mohali, India) came back from a set down to defeat Endicott's Ripley Uyeda 1-6, 7-5, 10-4 in the opening round, moving on to play second-seeded Sahana Raman of Middlebury. Raman prevailed 6-1, 6-1, eliminating Mount Holyoke's No. 2 singles player from the flight.

Chai and Kaur also played in the doubles flight at ITA Regionals, and registered an 8-5 victory over Kiana Thompson and Stephanie Beatrice of Regis in the Round of 64. Moving on to the Round of 32, the Mount Holyoke pair fell 8-2 to Amherst College team of Amy Cui and Maddie Swire.

Chai, Kaur and their Mount Holyoke teammates will play host to Division I Holy Cross on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 4:30pm.
