Tennis defeats Hartwick 7-2 in season home opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College tennis team won five out of six singles matches and two out of three doubles matches for a resounding 7-2 victory over Hartwick College, in both teams' opening dual match of the academic year Saturday at the MHC Tennis Courts.

Junior captain Annika Chai (London, England) and sophomore Kirat Kaur (Mohali, India) were both 2-0 on the day with wins at No. 1 doubles and at the top two singles positions, as was sophomore Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) at third doubles and sixth singles.

Chai and Kaur teamed up to defeat Lily Venuga and Gianna Leggieri 8-1 in the morning's No. 1 doubles match, while Bagley-Fortner teamed with sophomore Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) in an 8-6 win over Colleen Marsh and Madeline Morrison at third doubles. The Hawks stayed in the match with an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles, with Phoebe Olson and Jessica Waldmann defeating sophomore captain Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) and first-year Rachel Allen (Mary Esther, Fla.) 8-4.

Allen and Smith both rebounded with singles victories, as Allen defeated Marsh in straight sets at No. 3 while Smith defeated Margaret Van Valkenburgh in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 4, 6-2, 6-7(7), 10-6.

Chai defeated Olson 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Kaur coasted past Vanuga 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

Bagley-Fortner defeated Olivia McArthur 5-7, 7-5, 10-8 at sixth singles, while Hartwick picked up its lone singles point with Leggieri's 6-2, 6-1 win over Vavra at No. 5 singles.

The Lyons will compete at ITA Regionals next weekend, Sept. 22-24 at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn.
