Tennis Posts 9-0 Victory Over Clark

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Mount Holyoke College tennis team earned a 9-0 sweep against Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday, marking the fourth sweep of the year for the Lyons. MHC improves to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while Clark falls to 5-6 overall and 1-5 in the NEWMAC.

The Lyons got off to a fast start, sweeping doubles play. From the third flight, the duo of senior captain Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) and sophomore Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) earned an 8-0 win over junior captain Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) and sophomore Maggie Tarbox (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial). Sophomore Ayame Yazawa (Toyoke, Japan/St. Johnbury Academy (Vt.)) and first year Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan/Tapei Municipal First Girls' HS) then notched an 8-1 win over sophomore Emily Shuman (Needham, Mass/Needham) and sophomore Adrien Horowitz (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) from the first flight.

In the second flight, Lyons' senior captain Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J./The Dwight-Englewood School) and first year Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding HS) recorded an 8-3 victory against first year Anna Gates (North Scituate, R.I./Ponagaset) and senior captain Amy Fallon (Derby, England/American School of Tangier) to put the Lyons up 3-0.

Chen got singles going with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tarbox from the sixth flight while Huang followed by besting Horowitz, 6-0, 6-1 to give the Lyons the deciding 5-0 lead. Junior Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India/Modern High School for Girls) made it a 6-0 margin with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Gates.

Yazawa went on to best Shuman, 6-1, 6-3 in the first flight, while Peabody picked up a win over Mai from the fourth flight, giving the Lyons a 7-0 advantage. Sophomore Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore./Grant) wrapped up singles action with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Fallon to give Mount Holyoke the match victory.

The Lyons return to action on Tuesday at 5:00pm when they face Springfield College at home. Clark is also in action Tuesday facing Smith College on the road at 4:00pm.
