Mount Holyoke Wins First Match In Puerto Rico

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez powered by a sweep in competitive doubles play on Wednesday. The Lyons improve to 9-5 on the year with the win.

Sophomore Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan/St. Johnsbury Academy (Vt.)) and first year Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal First Girls' HS) picked up an 8-5 win from the first flight, followed by an 8-4 victory from senior captain Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J./The Dwight-Englewood School) and first year Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding HS).

Senior captain Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) and sophomore Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) sealed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win to give MHC a 3-0 lead.

Action moved into singles competition and Huang kicked things off with a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win from the second flight. Timbrewal was forced to retire giving UPRM its first point, followed by a win from the six to put the score at 4-2.  

Peabody clinched the deciding point with a 6-0, 3-6, 10-7 victory in a super tiebreaker to give the Lyons a 5-2 advantage and the match win.

Chen continued the Lyons excellent performance with a 7-5, 6-4 win from the fifth flight, while Yazawa picked up the sixth point with a 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 in a super tie breaker to close out the match, 7-2.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Thursday when it plays the University of Puerto Rico Bayamon on the road at 11:00am.
