Lyons Top Gordon College On The Road

WENHAM, Mass. – Powered by a clean sweep in singles action, the Mount Holyoke College tennis team posted an 8-1 victory at Gordon College on Thursday evening. With the win, the Lyons improve to 13-8 on the season, while the Fighting Scots are now 11-9 overall.

Following a doubles effort that saw the Lyons go 2-1, MHC's singles players dominated with several tough matches. Earning the third point for the visitors was first year Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan/Tapei Municipal First Girls'), who posted an easy 6-0, 6-3 margin over Gordon's Kaelyn Hall. Classmate Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) then pushed the match score to 4-1 as she bested Haley Bean, 6-2, 6-3 from four.

MHC junior Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India/Modern HS for Girls) secured the match victory from the third flight, as she defeated Maddie Berry by a 6-4, 6-2 score. The Lyons continued to dominate over the remaining flights as senior captain Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) battled to a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 win against Gabby Brucker at five, while sophomore Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) made it a 7-1 advantage with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win against Emily Ontiveros at six.

The final singles match of the afternoon saw Lyons sophomore Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan/St. Johnsbury Academy (Vt.)) put out a gutsy performance. After falling 4-6 in the opening set, she battled back against Justine Hanson for a 6-2 win in the second to tie things up. In the super tiebreaker, Yazawa came away with the 11-9 win for a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) margin in the top flight.

Mount Holyoke opened Thursday's match with a solid doubles effort. From the first flight, Yazawa and Huang combined for an 8-3 win over Hall and Berry. Chen and Wang also posted an 8-3 score against Bean and Ontiveros from three, while Tibrewal and Peabody shouldered a tough 8-5 loss to Gordon's Hanson and Brucker at two.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday in their final match of the season at Endicott at 1pm. Gordon concluded the season with Thursday's match.
