Tennis Cruises To Second Win In Puerto Rico

Bayamon, Puerto Rico - The Mount Holyoke tennis team powered its way to an 8-1 win over the University of Puerto Rico Bayamon on Thursday afternoon. The Lyons improve to 10-5 on the season.

Doubles action began with first year Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal First Girls' HS) and Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan/St. Johnsbury Academy (Vt)) running away with an 8-2 win, followed by senior captain Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J./The Dwight-Englewood School) and first year Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding HS) taking an 8-2 victory.

Senior captain Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) and sophomore Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) executed the sweep with an 8-4 win to take a 3-0 lead.

Singles kicked off with 6-0, 6-0 wins at the top of the ladder from junior Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India/Modern High School for Girls), and at the five spot from Katherine Schumacher (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) to secure a 5-0 lead.

Chen cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the three spot, but Ana Morales of Puerto Rico Bayamon notched a win to make it 6-1. Sophomore Joy Maran (Santa Fe, N.M./Sante fe Prep) and Peabody executed in the final two matches with 6-2, 6-1, and 6-0, 6-0 win respectively for an 8-1 victory.

Mount Holyoke will be back on the courts with a six-game home stretch beginning with Connecticut College on April 1st at 10:30am.
