Nemivant Takes Third on Three-Meter Board; Lyons Wrap Up Day Two of NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships

Cambridge, Mass. - February 21, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team competed in the second day of the 2020 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships, hosted at MIT's Zesiger Sport and Fitness Center and is currently ninth with 151 points. 

Highlighting the day for the Lyons was a third-place result in the three-meter diving competition for senior Samantha Nemivant (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who produced a mark of 473.25 in the prelims, before taking third overall with a mark of 457.55 in the finals.

Beginning the day with the 200 freestyle relay prelims, the team of Tamara Mukulu (Nairobi, Kenya), Lauren Leese (Round Rock, Texas), Erin Schrama (Taunton, Mass.) and Caitlyn Richmond (Northampton, Mass.) just missed finals, as the group took 11th overall with a time of 1:44.37. Finishing the relay in 1:47.66, the team of Riley Hicks (Bow, N.H.), Anais Magner (Ohiwa, New Zealand), Gigi Picard (Wilmette, Ill.) and Naomi Brown (Bloomington, Ind.) finished 15th overall.

Brown was the Lyons' top performer in the 500 freestyle prelims, clocking in at 5:28.13, while in the 200 individual medley prelims, Leese posted a time of 2:17.89 to lead Mount Holyoke College's three student-athletes in the event.

Richmond finished 23rd overall in the 50 freestyle prelims, clocking in at 25.18 seconds, just missing the cut off for Finals, while Mukulu was 35th, touching the wall in 25.61 seconds. Wrapping up the morning session, the 400 medley relay team of Magner, Schrama, Brown and Mukulu took 15th with a time of 4:21.15.

The Lyons had a trio of student-athletes competing in the women's three-meter diving prelims, as Nemivant was second with a score of 473.25, just shy of her own 11-dive record from 2018 (476.20). In the finals, Nemivant would finish third overall with a final score of 457.55, while Kathryn Murphy (Fairport, N.Y.) was fifth, producing a mark of 439.60. Katie Kolozsvari (Danville, Ind.) was eighth with a score of 417.85. 

Entering the evening session, the 200 freestyle relay team of Mukulu, Brown, Schrama and Richmond were ninth with a combined time of 1:42.64, while the 400 medley relay team of Magner, Schrama, Brown and Richmond took ninth with a time of 4:17.06. 

The Lyons will return to action on Saturday, February 22 with the morning session of day three of the 2020 NEWMAC Championships will begin at 10 a.m.
