Golf Finishes Sixth at Middlebury Invitational

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Action at the 2017 Middlebury Invitational concluded on Saturday and after 36 holes of play, the Mount Holyoke College golf team placed sixth overall in the 12 team field. The Lyons, who posted a combined 340 on day two, finished with an overall combined score of 699 on the weekend. Amherst College powered from one stroke down on day to win this year's event by a three-stroke margin.

Leading the Lyons was sophomore Stephanie Spitzer (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), who powered her way to 19th overall. She posted an 89 on day one, but rebounded with a nine-stroke improvement for an 80 in the Final Round. Classmate Susan Lee (Irvine, Calif./University) was second on the team and 26th overall on the weekend with a combined score of 173. She shot an 89 on day one, improving by five strokes for an 84 on Sunday.

Sophomore Elizabeth Andrian (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) finished 37th overall at Middlebury with a combined 178 (87-91), while first year Caitlyn Richmond (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) placed 4st overall with a 181 score. After opening the tournament with a First Round score of 96, Richmond battled back on Sunday for an 11-stroke improvement and an 85 round score.

First year Lahela Delaney (Honolulu, Hawaii/Roosevelt) rounded out the competition for the Lyons, placing 49th overall with a 196 (94-102).

The Mammoths of Amherst came from behind to post victory on Sunday, finishing with a combined 638. Middlebury posted a combined 641 to finish second overall, while Williams College battled hard to place third overall with a score of 653. Vassar was fourth overall with a 667, while Hamilton rounded out the top-five with a score of 670.

Individually, Middlebury's Katharine Fortin rallied to earn medalist honors, recording a combined 156 (81-75), while Amherst's Isabelle Ouyang and Williams' Cordelia Chan tied for runner-up with a combined 157.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Williamstown, Mass., to compete in the Williams Fall Invitational. Action begins at 12pm at Taconic Golf Club, continuing on Sunday (9am).
