Swimmers Break More School Records on Day Two of NEWMAC Championships

WELLESLEY, Mass. (Feb. 20, 2010) – The 2010 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming and Diving Championships continued with seven more events today at Wellesley College. Lindsay Schonborn once again highlighted the day for Mount Holyoke, breaking three more school records. Over the first two days of the competition, the senior has posted record times in six events.

After 13 events, nine-time reigning champion Springfield College leads all teams with a score of 524. MIT is next with 395 points, while Wheaton College is in third place with a score of 395. The Lyons 99 points are good for eighth place overall.

Schonborn’s time of 1:09.02 in the preliminary round of the 100-yard breaststroke was good for tops in program history. She also established a new 50-yard breaststroke record with her first split time of 32.65 in the race. The senior went on to take sixth place in the event with her time of 1:10.41 in the finals.

First year Joan Burton recorded Mount Holyoke’s sixth school record of the weekend in the 100-yard butterfly with her time of 59.11.

Schonborn and Burton then teamed with sophomores Sarah Rooney and Lydia Bowers to post a seventh place result in the 800-yard freestyle relay with their record time of 8:06.36.

The Championship will conclude with seven more events tomorrow. Preliminaries of the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 400-yard freestyle relay and 1650-yard freestyle will take place beginning at 11:00 a.m. The finals of the three-meter diving event will begin at 1:30 p.m., while finals for the remaining events will begin at 6:30 pm.
