Swimmers Shatter School Records in Opening Day of NEWMAC Championships

WELLESLEY, Mass. (Feb. 19, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women’s swimming and diving team shattered three school records during the opening day of the 2010 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships at Wellesley College. After six events, nine-time reigning champion Springfield College leads all teams with a score of 293. MIT is close behind with 213 points, while Wheaton College is in third place with a score of 153.

Senior Lindsay Schonborn figured in on all three record breaking performances for the Lyons, who will enter the second day of competition in seventh place with 72 points. In addition to taking seventh place in the 200-yard individual medley with a record time of 2:14.79, she also contributed to record setting performances in both of the day’s relay races.

The quartet of Schonborn, sophomore Sarah Rooney, first year Joan Burton and sophomore Lydia Bowers posted a sixth place result in the 200-yard freestyle relay with their record time of 1:41.09. Schonborn, Burton, Bowers and first year Nora Cunningham then secured fifth place in the 400-yard medley relay with a record time of 4:07.12.

Tomorrow's first session will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the preliminaries of the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard individual medley, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard backstroke. The trials of the three meter diving event will begin at 1:30 p.m., while finals for the day's events will begin at 6:30 p.m.
