Smith Trips Up Swim and Dive, 167-133

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (Feb. 6, 2010) – The Smith College women’s swimming and diving team handed longtime rival Mount Holyoke College a 167-133 setback this afternoon in Northampton, Mass. With their fourth straight win over the Lyons, the Pioneers improved to 4-3 on the year. Mount Holyoke slid to 4-4.

Smith recorded first place finishes in nine of the 16 events. The Pioneers were paced by junior Lily Seidman, who racked up three victories. In addition to taking top honors in both the 100-yard (1:03.06) and 200-yard (2:19.99) butterfly events, she touched the wall first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.02).

First year Mackenzie Bradley recorded first place finishes in the 500-yard (5:37.60) and 1,000-yard (11:33.28) freestyle races. Meanwhile, classmate Isabelle Harper swept the diving events with scores of 195.35 and 216.40 on the one and three meter boards, respectively.

Smith’s remaining wins came from senior Christine Dzialo and first year Michelle Mai. Dzialo won the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.85), while Mai posted the top time in the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.33).

Leading the way for Mount Holyoke were senior Lindsay Schonborn, sophomore Lydia Bowers and first year Nora Cunningham. All three swimmers figured in on three first place finishes.

Schonborn and Bowers teamed with first year Joan Burton and junior Michelle Kroll to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:58.53). Bowers and Cunningham then captured top honors in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:51.54) along with Kroll and sophomore Sarah Rooney.

Schonborn went on to record top times in both the 100-yard (1:13.35) and 200-yard (2:40.23) breaststroke events, while Cunningham added individual triumphs in the 50-yard freestyle (26.61) and 100-yard backstroke (1:05.08). Bowers rounded things out with a victory in the 100-yard freestyle (56.47).

Both squads are slated to compete in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship at Wellesley College from Friday, February 19 through Sunday, February 21.
