Wellesley Tops Swim and Dive, 172-142

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Jan. 30, 2010) – Using a balanced attack, the Wellesley College women’s swimming and diving team downed Mount Holyoke College 172-142 this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Natatorium. The Blue took top honors in 10 of the 17 events to secure their 19th straight win over the Lyons.

Wellesley was led by first year Carolyn Jackson, who figured in on three first place finishes. After teaming up with senior Katherine Foley, junior Dana Dutton and classmate Virginia Hung to post the top time in the 200-yard medley relay (1:59.72), she added individual triumphs in both the 50-yard (32.81) and 100-yard (1:11.74) breaststroke events.

Foley took home top honors in the 50-yard backstroke (31.17), while Hung clocked the top time in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.14), and Dutton outlasted the field in the 1,650-yard freestyle (10:15.59).

Graduate student Savanna Johnson won the 50-yard freestyle (26.02), and sophomore Melanie Kaplan grabbed first place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:42.86).

Rounding things out for the Blue was first year Kathryn Goffin (Falmouth, Maine), who finished atop the standings in both the one meter (170.70) and three meter (170.69) diving competitions.

Mount Holyoke was paced by first year Joan Burton, who collected top honors in three events. After collecting first place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.38) and the 50-yard butterfly (28:45), she closed out the day with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:43.49) along with sophomore Lydia Bowers, first year Nora Cunningham and senior Lindsay Schonborn.

Bowers came out on top in the 100-yard freestyle (56.57), while Cunningham tapped in first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.63). Schonborn added a triumph in the 100-yard individual medley (1:04.57).

The Lyons remaining win came from sophomore Sarah Rooney, who nabbed top honors in the 200-yard individual medley (2:27.94).

Both squads are slated to cap off their regular seasons next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (4-3) will travel to Smith College, while Wellesley (5-4) will host Connecticut College and Bates College.
