Swim and Dive Upends Simmons, 161-138

BOSTON, Mass. (Jan. 16, 2010) – Led by senior Lindsay Schonborn, the Mount Holyoke College women’s swimming and diving team picked up a 161-138 victory over Simmons College this afternoon at the William J. Holmes Sports and Fitness Center. With their second straight win over the Sharks, the Lyons improved to 4-1 on the year. Simmons fell to 5-7. Of the 16 events, Mount Holyoke touched the wall first nine times.

Schonborn figured in on four wins to pace the guests. In addition to posting individual victories in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.75), 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.52) and 200-yard individual medley (2:21.95), she also teamed with first year Joan Burton, junior Michelle Kroll and first year Nora Cunningham to post the top time in the 400-yard medley relay (4:26.02).

Burton added individual triumphs in both the 50 (29.23) and 100-yard (1:04.77) butterfly events. Meanwhile, sophomore Lydia Bowers prevailed in the 100 (57.55) and 200-yard (2:10.47) freestyle competitions. The Lyons remaining win came from sophomore Victoria Gavin, who took home top honors in the 500-yard freestyle (5:54.23).

Leading the way for Simmons was first year Alyssa Musket, who amassed three first place finishes. After recording top times in both the 50-yard backstroke (31:10) and 50-yard freestyle (25.81), she teamed with junior Virginia Bette, junior Chennelle Jackson and senior Brittany Torelli to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:48.15).

Bette chipped in with an individual win in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.43), and senior Caitlin Urciuoli won the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:10.00). In the diving events, first year Kaira King finished atop the standings in the one meter (217.90), and junior Amanda Dirksmeier nabbed first place in the three meter (223.00).

Mount Holyoke (4-1) will resume its home slate on Wednesday, when it hosts Trinity College at 7:00 p.m.
