Swim and Dive Breezes By Western Connecticut, 168.5-120.5

DANBURY, Mass. (Nov. 21, 2009) – Sophomore Lydia Bowers and and first year Joan Burton (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) figured in on three first place finishes apiece, as the Mount Holyoke College women’s swimming and diving team topped Western Connecticut State University 168.5-120.5 this afternoon at the O’Neill Center Pool. With the win, the Lyons improved to 2-0 in dual meets this season.

Bowers and Burton teamed up with first year Nora Cunningham and sophomore Sarah Rooney to take top honors in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:46.40). They also posted two individual wins apiece. Bowers touched the wall first in both the 100-yard (1:03.40) and 200-yard (2:007.63) freestyle races. Meanwhile, Burton grabbed first place in the 100-yard (1:03.40) and 200-yard (2:24.22) butterfly events.

Cunningham added an individual triumph in the 50-yard freestyle (26.60), while Rooney clocked the top time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:29.29).

The Lyons remaining wins came from senior Lindsay Schonborn and junior Kaitlin Mitchell. Schonborn earned first place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.99), and Mitchell finished atop the standings in the three-meter diving competition.

Mount Holyoke (2-0) will be off until Saturday, December 5, when it hosts the Pioneer Valley Invitational at 10:00 a.m.
