Swim and Dive Tops Westfield State, 168-132

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Nov. 18, 2009) – Led by senior Lindsay Schonborn, the Mount Holyoke College women’s swimming and diving team downed Westfield State College 168-132 this evening at the Mount Holyoke Natatorium. It was the Lyons first dual meet of the 2009-10 campaign. Mount Holyoke grabbed first place in nine of the 16 events to secure their first win over the Owls since the 2005-06 season.

Schonborn figured in on four first place finishes to lead the way. She teamed with first year Joan Burton, junior Michelle Kroll and sophomore Lydia Bowers to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:58.90). The senior then claimed top honors in both the 50 (32.84) and 100-yard (1:13.86) breaststroke events as well as the 200-yard individual medley (2:23.05).

In addition to her relay triumph, Burton added wins in both the 50 (28:81) and 100-yard (1:03.19) butterfly competitions.

First year Nora Cunningham, sophomore Sarah Rooney and sophomore Victoria Gavin joined forces with Bowers to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:48.78). Rooney and Cunningham also claimed individual victories in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.73) and 100-yard freestyle (56.89), respectively.

Westfield State ended the night with a total of six wins. Sophomore Kim Schmidt captured top honors in both the 1-meter (242.35) and 3-meter (236.05) diving events. Meanwhile, senior Lindsey Malboeuf touched the wall first in the 50-yard (30.67) and 100-yard (1:07.02) backstroke events, and sophomore Kate Werner chipped in with top results in the 500-yard (5:44.72) and 1,000-yard (11:48.42) freestyle races.

Both squads are slated to return to action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (1-0) will travel to Western Connecticut State University, while Westfield State (1-1) will visit Smith College.
