Squash Quartet Competes in CSA Individual Championships

HARTFORD, Conn. (March 6, 2010) – Several members of the Mount Holyoke College women’s squash team competed in the 2010 College Squash Association Individual Championships at Trinity College this weekend. On the women’s side of the event, there were two divisions - Ramsay Cup (A draw) and Holleran Cup (B draw). All four Mount Holyoke entrants competed for the Holleran Cup.

Highlighting the weekend for the Lyons was sophomore Shara Robertson, who posted a 2-2 mark. She got things going with a 3-0 triumph over Lauren Mathieu of George Washington University in the round of 64.Robertson then suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 setback to Dartmouth College’s number two player, Corey Shafer, in the round of 32. After battling to a 2-2 tie, she fell 11-9 in the fifth and deciding game. Shafer entered the weekend as the Holleran Cup’s top seeded player. Robertson went on to split a pair of matches in the Second Round Consolation. She downed Rachel Wagner of Cornell University 3-2 in the first round before falling 3-0 to Trinity’s Emily Paton in the second round.

Senior Laurian Lue Yen handed Caroline Flynn of Connecticut College a 3-2 loss in the round of 64 before falling 3-0 to Dartmouth’s Rebecca Lau in the round of 32. Her weekend came to a close in the first round of the Second Round Consolation, where she was topped 3-0 by Katherine Giovinazzo of Princeton University.

Junior Laura Robinson was upended 3-2 by Vassar College’s Emilie Kraft in the round of 64. After receiving a first round bye in the First Round Consolation, she dropped a 3-0 decision to Laura Henry of Williams College in the second round.

First year Tempest Bowden opened her weekend with a 3-1 loss to Dartmouth’s Elizabeth Brown in the round of 64. She received a first round bye in the First Round Consolation and cruised to a 3-0 triumph over Katherine Bullard of George Washington in the second round. Bowden’s progress was halted in the quarterfinal round, where she fell 3-1 to Samantha Smith of Colby College.

The Lyons rounded out their 2009-10 campaign with an overall record of 14-9. They closed out their season at the Howe Cup, where they secured 12th place nationally.
