Squash Rolls Past Middlebury in Howe Cup Quarterfinals, 6-3

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Feb. 26, 2010) – The 12th seeded Mount Holyoke College women’s squash team rolled to a 6-3 triumph over 13th seeded Middlebury College today in the quarterfinal round of the 2010 College Squash Association Howe Cup National Championships.

With the win, the Lyons advanced to tomorrow’s Kurtz Cup (B Division) semifinals. They will face off against ninth seeded Dartmouth College, which downed 16th seeded Colby College 9-0. The match is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. on the campus of Yale University. The Big Green grabbed a 9-0 victory when the two clubs met on February 7.They edged Mount Holyoke 5-4 in the semifinals last winter. Champions in each of the Howe Cup’s four subdivisions will be crowned on Sunday.

Mount Holyoke (14-7) put together one of its finest performances of the season today after narrowly defeating the Panthers 5-4 at home on January 24.

The Lyons top five players each posted victories to lead the way. From number one to number win, the group included junior Vidushi Gurunada, senior Laura Robinson, sophomore Shara Robertson, senior Laurian Lue Yen and first year Tempest Bowden. The remaining win came from senior Hillela Simpson, who came out on top at the number nine position.

Gurunada, Robertson and Lue Yen each won by scores of 3-0. Meanwhile, Robinson, Bowden and Simpson prevailed 3-1.

Middlebury’s (19-8) wins came from Lindsay Becker, Anne Ulrich and Alexandra Boillot at the numbers six, seven and eight spots, respectively.
