Mount Holyoke Squash Rolls to Fourth Consecutive Seven Sisters Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2010) – For the fourth consecutive season, the Mount Holyoke College women’s squash team grabbed top honors at the Seven Sisters Championship. After racing to a 9-0 victory over Wellesley College in the semifinals, the Lyons picked up a 9-0 triumph over Vassar College in the championship. This year’s tournament took place at Kenyon Hall on the campus of Vassar.

In its semifinal match, Mount Holyoke cruised to a 9-0 victory over Wellesley. All nine players recorded sweeps for the Lyons, who picked up their sixth straight win over the Blue. They were paced by sophomore Shara Robertson and senior Laurian Lue Yen, who dropped just four and five points, respectively.

The title match pitted Mount Holyoke and Vassar for the fifth year in a row. Once again, the Lyons prevailed in convincing fashion, winning by a score of 7-2. Junior Vidushi Gurunada, senior Laura Robinson, Robertson, Lue Yen first year Tempest Bowden and senior Hillela Simpson registered shutouts in their respective matches to highlight things. Mount Holyoke’s remaining triumph came from senior Michelle Zagardo, who came out on top 3-1.

Seven Lyons earned All-Tournament team accolades. The group included Gurunada, Robinson, Robertson, Lue Yen, Bowden, Simpson and Zagardo. They were joined by Vassar’s Meg Taylor and Alexa Lichtenstein.

Mount Holyoke (13-5) will return to action tomorrow at Dartmouth College beginning at 2:30 p.m.
