Squash Splits Pair in Maine

LEWISTON, Maine (Jan. 30, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women’s squash team split a pair of matches in Maine today. After suffering a 6-3 setback at Bates College, the Lyons rebounded with a 7-2 triumph over Colby College.

Senior Laurian Lue Yen and first year Tempest Bowden picked up shutout victories in Mount Holyoke’s first contest of the day at Bates. The Lyons remaining win came from sophomore Shara Robertson, who held on for a 3-2 triumph at the number three slot. Mount Holyoke had defeated the Bobcats four times in a row prior to today’s match.

The Lyons cruised to their sixth straight win over Colby in their second outing of the day. Robertson, Lue Yen, Bowden, sophomore Paulina Rojek and senior Lila Khan all came out on top by scores of 3-0.

Junior Vidushi Gurunada and senior Hillela Simpson also picked up wins for the Lyons. Gurunada prevailed 3-1 at the number one position, while Simpson took her number eight match by a score of 3-2.

Mount Holyoke (11-5) is slated to participate in the Seven Sisters Championship next Saturday at Vassar College. The Lyons have captured top honors at the tournament in each of the past three seasons.
