Squash Pitches Two Shutouts at Home Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Jan. 23, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women’s squash team cruised to a pair of 9-0 victories at its home invitational today at the Kendall Sports and Dance Complex. After blanking Hamilton College, the Lyons downed Wesleyan University to push their overall record to 8-4. Over the past four seasons, they have posted a perfect 14-0 mark at the tournament.

The 2010 version of the Mount Holyoke/Smith Invitational began last night and will conclude tomorrow. A total of twenty-six men’s and women’s squads from around the region are competing in the event, which is being hosted by Amherst College in addition to Mount Holyoke and Smith. Over the course of the weekend, 53 matches will be played. The Lyons will wrap things up tomorrow against Middlebury College at 10:30 a.m. and Columbia University at 1:30 p.m.

Mount Holyoke sprinted to a 9-0 triumph over Hamilton in its first match of the weekend. It was the Lyons sixth straight win over the Continentals. Leading the way for the hosts were junior Vidushi Gurunada, senior Laura Robinson, sophomore Shara Robertson, senior Lila Khan and senior Hillela Simpson, who each picked up 3-0 victories.

The most competitive contest of the match was between sophomore Paulina Rojek and Anne Edelstein at the number six slot. After splitting the first four games, Rojek took the fifth and deciding game by a score of 11-8.

Senior Laurian Lue Yen, first year Tempest Bowden and senior Michelle Zagardo completed the sweep with 3-1 wins in their contests.

With momentum on its side, the Lyons breezed to a 9-0 triumph over Wesleyan in their second match of the day. It was Mount Holyoke’s 16th straight win over the Cardinals and its second of the 2009-10 campaign. When the two squads met on December 6, the Lyons prevailed 7-2.

Gurunada dropped just eight points on her way to a 3-0 victory over Casey Simchik at the number one position. Robertson, Lue Yen, Bowden, Rojek, Khan and Simpson also prevailed in three games. Meanwhile, Robinson and Zagardo chipped in with 3-1 victories in their respective matches.
