Babson Downs Basketball to Cap Off Perfect NEWMAC Regular Season, 65-30

BABSON PARK, Mass. (Feb. 20, 2010) – The Babson College women’s basketball team cruised to a 65-30 triumph over New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at Staake Gymnasium. With their 14th straight win, the Beavers put the finishing touches on a perfect regular season in league play. They rounded out the regular season with an overall record of 22-3 and a league mark of 18-0. Mount Holyoke dropped to 8-17 overall and 6-12 in NEWMAC play.

Babson will enter this week’s NEWMAC Tournament as the top seed, and will host the eighth seeded Coast Guard Academy in the Quarterfinal Round on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Mount Holyoke has qualified for the NEWMAC Tournament as the seventh seed and will travel to second seeded WPI for a Quarterfinal Round tilt on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

It will be the Lyons second straight postseason appearance. They fell 52-42 in the opening round at WPI last winter. The program’s last victory in the NEWMAC Tournament was in the Championship at WPI during the 2006-07 season.

Eleven players recorded points for Babson, which converted 46.8% (29-62) of its shots from the floor. The Beavers were paced by first year Sarah Collins, who collected 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field. The center also grabbed five rebounds and added three blocked shots. Sophomore forward Kathleen King tallied 13 points and five boards, while junior forward Damisi Adewumi tossed in 10 points.

Leading the way for Mount Holyoke was led by sophomore guard Christine Chancy, who recorded 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. Sophomore forward Tricia Chase and by first year guard Angelica Pascual chipped in with five points apiece. The Lyons were outrebounded 38-28 and committed 34 turnovers.

Collins scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half, as Babson built a 28-13 advantage. The Beavers continued to roll in the second stanza, outscoring Mount Holyoke 37-17. They led by as many 37 points in the waning minutes.
