Basketball Rallies Past Coast Guard, 56-38

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Jan. 20, 2010) – Using a balanced scoring attack, the Mount Holyoke College women’s basketball team breezed to a 56-38 victory over the Coast Guard Academy this evening in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. It was the Lyons second win in a row.

Mount Holyoke knocked down 41.4% (24-58) of its attempts from the floor and 77.8% (7-9) of its free throw attempts. The Lyons finished with 16 assists on 24 made baskets and outrebounded the Bears 40-28. Leading the way was first year guard Angelica Pascual, who collected 15 points and five rebounds. Seniors Erin Cain and Jess Olson netted 11 points apiece, while sophomore guard Christine Chancy added nine points, seven boards and six assists. Rounding things out for the hosts was sophomore forward Tricia Chase, who amassed eight points and eight rebounds.

Senior forward Melissa Martinelli tallied 14 points to pace Coast Guard. First year guard Karli Collins posted 10 points and six boards, while senior forward Carin Sweeney chipped in with seven points and 10 rebounds. The Bears were limited to 34.0% (17-50) shooting from the field in their fourth consecutive setback.

Coast Guard jumped out to a 9-4 advantage following a three-pointer by first year guard Vanessa Sillman 3:22 into the contest. The Bears were able to maintain control until the 10:36 mark, when Martinelli was ticketed with her second foul of the night. With their star on the bench, they were outscored 16-2 over the remainder of the period, as Mount Holyoke built a 27-15 edge. From there, it was all Mount Holyoke. The Lyons led by as many as 21 points (50-29) in the waning minutes of the second half.

Both squads are slated to resume their NEWMAC schedules on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (6-10, 4-5 NEWMAC) will host Wheaton College, while Coast Guard (4-8, 3-6 NEWMAC) will travel to WPI.
