Babson Overpowers Basketball, 73-28

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Jan. 9, 2010) – The Babson College women’s basketball team breezed to a 73-28 victory over New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the Mildred Howard Gymnasium. With their third straight win over the Lyons, the Beavers improved to a perfect 6-0 in league play.

Twelve players scored points from Babson, which converted 55.8% (29-52) of its shots from the field and 91.7% (11-12) of its free throw attempts. The Beavers racked up eight blocked shots and posted a 38-22 advantage on the glass. They finished with 20 assists on 29 made baskets. Leading the way was sophomore center Nicole Wurdeman, who netted 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor. Junior guard Becky Bowman recorded 11 points, while first year center Sarah Collins added eight boards and three blocks off the bench.

Mount Holyoke was paced by first year guard Angelica Pascual, who tallied team highs of 10 points, five rebounds and three steals. Senior forward Jess Olson collected seven points, while classmate Erin Cain chipped in with four points and a squad best four assists. The Lyons were limited to just 21.6% (11-51) shooting from the field and committed 24 turnovers. They have suffered five straight setbacks.

Wurdeman scored all 16 of her points in the first half, as Babson built a 38-18 advantage. The Beavers continued to roll in the second stanza, outscoring Mount Holyoke 35-10. Their final cushion of 45 points was their largest of the day. Sophomore forward Kathleen King led all scorers with eight points after the break.

Both teams are slated to resume their NEWMAC schedules on the road on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (4-9, 2-4 NEWMAC) will travel to WPI, while Babson (10-3, 6-0 NEWMAC) will visit Wellesley College. The Lyons next home game is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, January 20 against the Coast Guard Academy at 7:00 p.m.
