SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Jan. 13, 2010) – Award winning documentary filmmaker and well known motivational speaker Jenny Mackenzie will be visiting Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m. to present her new film entitled "Kick Like A Girl." Her appearance will highlight the College’s National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration. This year will be the 24th annual celebration of the national event, which traditionally takes place February.

Refreshing and triumphant, “Kick Like A Girl” reminds us all of the lessons learned in competitive athletics and how sports has been one of the most effective instruments of social change in our lifetime. It is the story of what happens when The Mighty Cheetahs, an undefeated third grade girls soccer team competes in the boys division. With humor and candor, the film shares many life lessons about teamwork, leadership, fair play, work ethic and gender equality. It is narrated by eight year old Lizzie, a self described soccer girl, who doesn't let juvenile diabetes, elbow blocks or grass stains interfere with her desire to compete.

A clinician, researcher, former non-profit administrator, and mother of three, Dr. Mackenzie will speak to students with genuine warmth, humor and real life passion based on her 25 years of experience as a “social change” professional. She will captivate, entertain, and inspire her audience with her documentary film clips followed by a motivational discussion on life lessons learned on the playing field.

Dr. Mackenzie’s presentation will be open to the campus community and will take place in Hooker Auditorium from 6:30-8:00 p.m. It will be hosted by the Mount Holyoke Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in conjunction with the College’s Department of Athletics.

Across the country, more than 1,000 events will be taking place to recognize for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Congress has proclaimed this national day each year since 1987. The campaign recognizes the progress of girls and women in sports and the benefits that sports and fitness activities can bring to the lives of all girls and women. It is organized nationally by the Girl Scouts of the USA, Girls Incorporated, National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, the National Women’s Law Center and the Women’s Sports Foundation. This year's theme, Stay Strong, Play On, supports the traditions and efforts of this long standing initiative.
